Anne Belov’s striking new paintings are the featured show for the month of August at the Rob Schouten Gallery. Reflecting the inspiration she has gained through her extensive European travels. Belov focuses on the architecture, landscape, light, and people she observes, and relishes the art history that abounds there.
Belov said: 'Sometimes it feels like I am always in motion. For the last 30 years, much of my inspiration for painting has come from the places I’ve visited: Italy, Holland, Belgium, and England, as well as other places in the US. But when I get to stop moving, and settle into my studio, making paintings from my travels is a time of reflection. I revisit sketches I made and photographs I have taken, and recreate them in paint.'
'To paint a place you have been, is a way to relive, remember, and reflect on the experience. But no matter where I travel, the same elements grab my attention: light, color, architecture, people inhabiting a space. I love to see people in shops, seen through the window at dusk. The light inside creates the illusion of a stage set and they are actors on the stage. The unknown drama creates tension in the painting.'
'This show is comprised of paintings from experiences both near and far. Through a life in motion, I strive to find a quiet place to consider the world and all it has to offer.'
The artists’ reception for Belov will take place during ‘First Friday at Greenbank Farm’ on Friday, August 5 from 5 to 7 PM. Light refreshments will be served. The Farm’s other galleries and shops will all be open until 7PM as well. There will be live music in several spots, and delicious food by Island Mexican Food Truck, Whidbey Island Kettle Corn, and of course, dessert at Whidbey Pies Cafe.
