Painter Jacob Kohn’s fascination with the transparent and reflective qualities of water, koi, and lily ponds have been the signature of his oeuvre. Newly retired after a 30 year teaching career at Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, Kohn set to work on a new series of paintings that take his work the next step further.

Koi Dancers II - oil on canvas   $1,800

"The new koi paintings are different from past versions in which the fish seemed to flow casually through natural forms in a calm, watery plane. These koi are now swimming in a dark space with no natural enhancement save for the water patterns caused by their movement. To me they are active and lively, with less focus on detail and more on their color and structure. They are like flashes of light and seem to be in motion, pushing through the water.

MARVEL-ous Lilies - oil on canvas   $5,000

Lime Light - oil on canvas   $2,000

The latest lily ponds are also a departure from my many past visits to this subject matter, which tended to focus on natural, often subtle color details and realistic illusions. These current paintings are more vivid and each is a unique example of a familiar theme. They are less focused on reality and more on fantasy and even unnatural color passages. One is titled “MARVEL-ous Lilies.” I feel this one evokes almost a comic book style with vivid hues surrounded by black outlines.”

Kohn’s enthusiasm to now be able to fully commit himself to his art and the freedom to create and explore the natural world he’s been passionate about has resulted in a fine series of new paintings we feel extremely lucky to be exhibiting.

The Arrival - oil on canvas   $2,000

Assam - oil on canvas   $5,000

Koi Dancers I - oil on canvas   $1,800

The Swimming Through show opens in conjunction with “Langley’s First Saturday Art Walk” when Langley’s galleries and shops are open until 7 PM. Featured artist, Jacob Kohn, will be in attendance and light refreshments will be served.
